In welding, oxygen is primarily used in oxy-fuel welding and cutting processes, where it's combined with a fuel gas like acetylene to create a high-temperature flame for melting and joining metals or for cutting. It can also be added in small percentages to shielding gases like argon to improve weld pool fluidity, arc stability, and penetration, particularly when welding carbon and low alloy steels.
