N2 plays a crucial role in welding and metal fabrication processes by improving the quality of welds and reducing oxidation. 

In TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding, nitrogen is used as a shielding gas to prevent the formation of oxides on the weld's surface, resulting in a cleaner and stronger weld.
